On the box…

Afternoon all, Wally here. I’ve spent a few hours in front of the TV this week… all in the name of research you see!

First up… The Call Centre (BBC3 Monday night).

At W2 we run incentives, which are quite often for sales teams and call centre staff, so I watched with interest. Blimey, that Nev’s a character isn’t he!? #Awkward!!!

Although he makes David Brent look like boss of the year, you can see he tries to keep his team motivated and cares that his staff are kept happy. I’m not so sure a speed dating night, throwing things at staff and singing Mr Brightside in inductions is the right way to go about it! His motto “Happy people sell” works for me though. A good incentive programme would help this though Nev, and would make sure staff are busy working and boosting their sales figures, rather than hiding Hayleys tea bags!!

Then, The Apprentice (BBC1 Wednesday) enters into the events world… this weeks task; Corporate Away Days.

“Motivating and Entertaining Employees is serious Business”. A good sound-bite to start the show which I strongly agree with!!

Both teams developed their events before the brief meeting. A strange way to go about it to say the least – I’d recommend ascertaining the clients business objective for the event first chaps. OK, so it was obvious they were encouraged to do it DIY for the show (even down to cooking delegates lunch), but this really was proof that if you don’t run an event properly then it’s worse than not doing it at all!

I have to disagree with Lord Sugar on this though. The only thing they really got right was hire a professional motivational speaker. (OK, Neil managed to blag a good speech it seems – a new vocation?) But if the teams would have used professional suppliers throughout then the theme would have been carried through, a slick event would have taken place, business goals would have been achieved and they wouldn’t be refunding money!

Lastminute & Barclays… maybe call the pro’s next time eh?

Have a good weekend all

Wally.
